Action Truing

Action truing is bolt-action work that squares critical bearing surfaces so the bolt seats evenly. The goal is consistent lockup and a better foundation for accuracy work. Results vary from rifle to rifle. We do not promise a group size.

Partial truing

We can wipe the bolt face and lap the bolt lugs for about $80. This is a partial truing. It is not a complete action truing.

Complete action truing

Complete action truing is only recommended along with rebarreling and replacement of the recoil lug. It is around $200 on a Remington 700 or a Winchester Model 70. Other actions are by estimate after inspection.

Precision-ground recoil lug

A precision-ground recoil lug is around $50. That figure is for the part. It is separate from the complete action truing labor of around $200.

What this is not

Action truing is not a full custom build. It is not a guaranteed group size. The work is meant to give the bolt a more even seat and a better foundation for later accuracy work. How the rifle shoots after that still depends on the barrel, the ammunition, the stock or chassis, and how the rifle is used.

Pricing

Those figures are estimates from similar past jobs. They can vary with the action and with the condition of the surfaces. Prices assume payment by cash or check unless we note otherwise. Lead times follow our general repair windows on the home page lead times table unless we give a different estimate for your job.

What to bring

Bring the bolt-action rifle, fully unloaded. Tell us whether you want partial truing or complete action truing with a rebarrel, and name the action (for example a Remington 700 or a Winchester Model 70). If you want the precision-ground recoil lug, say so when you call.
