Terms and Conditions of Service
Last updated October 1, 2026
ncgunsmith.com and doublehgunsmithing.com are the same site. Current hours, shop rates, lead times, transfer fees, shipping and handling fees, and storage fees are published on that site and control over any dollar amounts in older printed copies of these Terms.
By delivering a firearm or component to Double H Gunsmithing (“DHG,” “the Shop,” “we,” or “us”), shipping an item to the Shop, signing a work order or claim check, or otherwise requesting service, the customer (“you”) agrees to these Terms.
1. Mission
Double H Gunsmithing was established 16 May 2003 by Ken Barfield. The Shop exists to honor Jesus Christ in all we do, so that others may see our joy in Him, and to provide excellent workmanship in the gunsmithing trade. We seek to exceed expected workmanship, to give sound advice, and to deal honestly with customers.
2. Acceptance and defined dates
A work order authorizes the Shop to inspect, diagnose, test-fire with factory ammunition, repair, modify, refinish, or otherwise service the item described. Delivery or inbound shipment, and approval of a work order, constitute acceptance of these Terms.
Disposition is the date the customer obtains physical possession of the firearm and becomes able to inspect it. Disposition is the sign-out date in the Shop’s acquisition and disposition (A&D) record. The thirty-day workmanship warranty in Section 14 runs from disposition.
Invoice due date is the date printed on the invoice as the due date. An invoice may be sent before disposition, as notice that work is complete and payment is due. The invoice due date is not the start of the warranty.
Storage begins when the completed item remains unclaimed and the customer has not authorized return shipment. Physical inspection is not possible during that period, so the warranty clock does not run while the item remains in the Shop awaiting pickup or authorized return shipment.
3. Scope of Service
DHG provides general gunsmithing and refinishing for modern American cartridge-loading firearms manufactured after 1900, and for other firearms the Shop accepts at its discretion, subject to the exclusions below. Service is limited to work that can be performed lawfully under the Shop’s Federal Firearms License and, where applicable, Special Occupational Tax (SOT) status.
4. Exclusions
4.1 Generally excluded items
The Shop does not service:
- Air guns (including dart, airsoft, paintball, and pellet guns)
- Bows, crossbows, swords, knives, toy guns
- 3D-printed firearms
- Firearms whose internal components are mainly plastic (for example, American Tactical Omni Hybrid)
- Non-firearm militaria
- Non-serialized firearms manufactured after the Gun Control Act of 1968, including unmarked home-built firearms made by persons who are not FFL licensees
- Excessively rusted firearms, waterlogged firearms, firearms held together by tape or nails, and firearms damaged by fire
- Binary triggers, Forced Reset Triggers (FRT), and any mechanism intended to simulate fully automatic fire
The Shop services firearms designed and proofed for factory smokeless-powder ammunition. That includes military-issue and military-pattern smokeless designs (Mauser bolt actions, Krag, and comparable service rifles, including commercial and sporterized examples) and firearms designed by John Moses Browning for smokeless cartridges. Firearms designed only for black powder, or never intended or proofed for factory smokeless ammunition, are generally not accepted. In addition, firearms that use obsolete ammunition or ammunition available only by handloading may be refused or accepted solely at the Shop’s discretion.
4.2 Handloads
The Shop is not licensed to commercially reload ammunition and does not provide reloading advice or load-development services. Function after service is judged only with factory-loaded ammunition. The Shop is not responsible for malfunctions related to handloaded ammunition or ammunition modified from factory condition.
4.3 Turkey-shoot guns
Shotguns prepared for turkey-shoot competition whose critical components have been previously modified by the owner or another gunsmith are generally not accepted. The Shop does not modify critical components or provide accurizing services for those guns beyond general sight or scope mounting.
4.4 Prior work by others
There is no generally accepted certifying body for gunsmiths in the United States. Prior work may leave a firearm inoperable or in a condition the Shop will not finish. Disclose, before drop-off or shipment, any work previously performed by another shop or individual.
If the gunsmith determines the firearm cannot be finished to the Shop’s standard, the Shop may abort the work order, reassemble the firearm in its then-present condition, charge for work already performed, and require an “Unsafe to Fire” acknowledgement before release.
4.5 Excessive wear
If the gunsmith determines a firearm cannot be finished to the Shop’s standard because of abuse, neglect, wear, age, or improper use, the firearm will be returned in its present condition. You will be billed for work already performed and must sign an “Unsafe to Fire” card before claiming it.
4.6 Firing-pin disablement
If a customer credibly indicates an intent to discharge a firearm the gunsmith has marked Unsafe to Fire, the Shop may remove or disable the firing pin(s) before return.
4.7 Excluded manufacturers and models
The Shop does not service firearms produced by RG / Rohm, Bryco, Jimenez, Hi-Point, Raven, Lorcin, or Jennings.
The Shop does not service Stevens Model 70 (“Visible Loader”) or Stevens Model 73Y.
The Shop does not offer repairs for mechanical issues, including failure to eject or extract, on:
- Savage / Stevens / Springfield Models 87, 87A, 51, and variants
- Remington 740, 742, 7400, and Model Four (semi-automatic)
- J.C. Higgins Model 31 (.22 caliber)
4.8 Exceptions
A gunsmith may grant a one-time exception. You remain bound by the work order and must still disclose any excluded category. Tell staff if the item matches an excluded model or category so a gunsmith can accept or refuse it.
5. Drop-off, test-fire, and shop conduct
Bring the complete firearm in assembled condition when possible, fully unloaded (including magazines), with the sling removed. Bring at least one magazine for magazine-fed firearms and factory ammunition of the type you intend to use.
Do not enter the building with a loaded firearm if you cannot confirm it is unloaded. Come inside first, inform staff, and wait for instructions. Anyone who enters with a loaded weapon other than a holstered or concealed personal-carry firearm will be asked to leave, and that firearm will not be accepted. Loaded personal-carry firearms must remain holstered or concealed for the entire visit. Unload a carry gun before entering if that gun is the item being left for service.
A few rounds of factory test ammunition (typically 5 to 10) is enough for most jobs. For failure to feed, fire, extract, or eject, two full boxes are recommended. The Shop will inventory customer ammunition on the work order and return unused rounds.
6. Function testing and the limits of “safe”
No firearm is harmless. A firearm that functions as designed can still injure or kill if it is stored, handled, or fired without due care. The Shop does not certify that any firearm is incapable of causing harm.
The Shop will not represent that a firearm functions as intended unless the Shop itself test-fires that complete firearm with factory-loaded ammunition. If the Shop cannot perform that test, the invoice will be marked “use at your own risk,” the Section 14 workmanship warranty will not cover function, and the Shop makes no representation about ignition, feeding, extraction, ejection, or structural integrity in use.
Circumstances in which the Shop cannot perform a function test, or in which any test that is performed does not support a function representation, include:
- The customer does not leave the complete firearm (for example, no stock, no bolt, no barrel, or no magazine on a magazine-fed gun).
- The customer does not provide suitable factory test ammunition, including rare or obsolete calibers the Shop does not stock.
- The customer instructs the Shop not to fire the gun in order to preserve collector value or finish.
- The customer declines a complete repair to the Shop’s standard, or cancels the job before the work and test-fire can be finished.
- The customer uses or intends to use handloads or other non-factory ammunition.
- The customer uses or intends to use the firearm in a way it was not designed to operate.
“Unsafe to Fire” and “use at your own risk” both mean the Section 14 warranty does not apply to function or to subsequent use of that firearm.
7. Parts, ammunition, and accessories
DHG does not sell parts, accessories, or ammunition to the general public. At its discretion, the Shop may sell such items as part of a work order or for installation by a qualified gunsmith. Customers with a firearm in the Shop may request special-order items needed to complete that work order. An advance deposit is required for large-ticket items. Once the Shop has placed a vendor order, cancellation is governed by Section 21.
8. Work orders, estimates, and changes
A work order states the work you request. It is not a guarantee that every requested task can or will be completed.
The gunsmith may adjust minor details when that adjustment is in the customer’s interest. If the gunsmith finds a condition outside the original work order that is critical to function, the Shop may perform the necessary repair subject to Section 9.
Change requests after acceptance must be submitted in writing (mail or email) and acknowledged in writing by the Shop. Unacknowledged requests are not binding. You remain liable for work already authorized. If original work has already been performed when a change is requested, charges apply to both the original and subsequent work.
Estimated completion dates are not appointments. Current lead times are published on the Home page and may change.
9. Rates, estimates, and minimum charge
Current standard, Priority, and Lightning hourly rates, the minimum shop charge, cash-discount terms, and sales-tax practice are published on the Home page. When hourly billing is not suitable, the Shop uses the Brownell’s Shop Price Survey as a general guide.
Estimates are approximate and not binding. The Shop may decline to stop workflow for a detailed estimate before work is finished.
Spending limits for ordinary work, including any cap above a written estimate, are as stated on the work order or as published on the Home page. That ordinary spending limit does not apply to Lightning service. Lightning work is billed for time, parts, travel, and expedited freight actually incurred. The Shop may require a deposit before Lightning work if expected cost may exceed the market value of the firearm.
Payment in full is due before release.
10. Place in line and expedited service
The firearm, and any parts required for the job, must be physically present to hold a place in line. Work is completed first-in, first-out when possible. The Shop does not reserve a place in line without the firearm.
Priority and Lightning service are described on the Home page.
11. Customer representations
You represent that you are lawfully entitled to possess the item, that you have disclosed prior gunsmithing and known defects, that your contact and identification information is accurate, and that you will not request unlawful work. Incomplete disclosure may result in refusal of service, abort of the work order, and charges for work already performed.
12. Inbound shipping and handling
You may ship a legally owned firearm to the Shop for lawful repair, customization, or transfer. Contact the Shop before shipping so the Shop can send a current signed FFL and confirm the address.
Address the package to DHG Precision, 102 Farmer Rd, Blanch, NC 27212. Do not put “Double H Gunsmithing,” “gunsmith,” or other gun-related wording on the label or carton. Require adult signature. Do not ship ammunition in the same box. Unload the firearm. Do not mark the outside of the package as containing a firearm.
A private owner may mail an unloaded rifle or shotgun by USPS with tracking and signature. A private owner may not mail a handgun by USPS. Handguns are ordinarily shipped by a local FFL.
Include your name, phone, and email; a photocopy of your government photo ID; a short description of the work; and, if requested, a copy of the Shop’s signed FFL. If another FFL is shipping, exchange FFL copies before the gun ships.
NFA items require approved ATF paperwork before they leave the sender. Contact the Shop before shipping any NFA item.
Work shipped to the Shop for service, and work the Shop ships back to you, incurs a handling fee plus actual carrier charges. Current handling fees, packing rules, and storage fees are published on the Ship page. Outbound packing to another FFL, Mag-na-port, Briley, or Browning is published on the Shipping Services page.
13. Acquisition, disposition, and restricted items
Federal law governs acquisition and disposition. The Shop records both as required by its FFL. Customers may view the current license in the lobby or request a file copy for a transferring dealer.
The restricted portion of a firearm is the receiver, frame, or other component specified by the manufacturer or ATF. Suppressors are firearms under the National Firearms Act.
Post-1968 firearms must bear a serial number and manufacturer or importer marking. Unmarked post-1968 firearms will be refused.
NFA items are serviceable only while the Shop’s SOT stamp is valid. To claim an NFA item, present a valid government-issued photo ID and a valid SOT stamp or approved ATF Form 4 matching the item. Original stamps are preferred. Illegible or incomplete copies will not be accepted. The person transporting an NFA item is responsible for any required interstate-travel approval under 18 U.S.C. § 922(a)(4).
The Shop will not dispose of a firearm to an unauthorized person. Disposition is permitted only if you:
- Are the person who delivered the firearm, or the Shop is shipping it to the address on the photo ID provided at intake, and the Shop has no knowledge of a present disqualifying status; or
- Complete a transfer at the Shop. Current fees are published on the Transfers page. You must complete ATF Form 4473, undergo NICS or present a valid concealed-handgun permit where that option applies, present valid photo ID, and primarily reside in North Carolina (North Carolina ID required for handguns). Suppressors, other NFA items, handguns, and receivers can be transferred only to North Carolina residents; or
- Are an on-duty law-enforcement officer in uniform presenting a badge and photo ID and permitting photocopies; or
- Hold a valid FFL of a type that permits acquisition without Form 4473, or provide shipping details and an FFL file copy for shipment to such a licensee, and pay shipping, the handling fee published on the Ship page, and any receiving-dealer fees in advance.
A transfer to anyone other than the person who delivered the firearm requires Form 4473 and NICS at the Shop before possession.
Except for on-duty law enforcement presenting a warrant, a written directive from the personal representative of a deceased customer’s estate, or failure to claim an item under Section 15, the Shop will not release a firearm to a person not named on the work order and claim check unless the customer authorizes that person in writing before the transaction.
The Shop does not give legal advice.
14. Workmanship warranty and inspection
The quality and craftsmanship of service work is warranted for thirty (30) days from disposition, meaning the A&D sign-out date on which the customer obtains physical possession and can inspect the firearm. Warranty service is limited to the specific work described on that invoice. No warranty service will be given for claims outside the scope of the service work described on the invoice.
Inspect completed work within those same thirty days after you take possession. Later claims are limited to latent defects in the specific work the Shop performed.
The warranty covers defects in the Shop’s workmanship on those operations only. It does not cover manufacturer defects, prior work by others, customer-supplied parts, handloads or non-factory ammunition, subsequent alteration by anyone other than DHG, ordinary wear, abuse, neglect, use contrary to the firearm’s design, or any item marked “Unsafe to Fire” or “use at your own risk.”
15. Storage and unclaimed items
Storage fees begin when the completed item remains unclaimed thirty (30) days after the invoice due date and the customer has not authorized return shipment. Current storage fees are published on the Ship page and are not prorated. Any finance charge will be the amount stated on the invoice.
Unclaimed items will be stored for up to one (1) year from the invoice due date. If an item remains unclaimed and any balance is unpaid one (1) year after the invoice due date, the item may be sold at auction on GunBroker.com. Sale proceeds will be applied, in order, to the outstanding invoice, GunBroker commission, GunBroker listing fees, a commission to Double H Gunsmithing for listing and related costs, and shipping to the buyer if applicable.
Any surplus will be sent by certified check or money order, by certified mail, to the last address on file.
Items will not be released until all charges, including storage, are paid.
16. Limitation of liability and responsible use
Customers are expected to store and use firearms in a responsible manner. Always store firearms in a secure location outside the reach of children. Additional owner guidance is published by ATF as ATF P 5300.22 at https://www.atf.gov/firearms/docs/guide/safety-and-security-firearm-owners-atf-p-530022.
Double H Gunsmithing is not liable for injury, damages, loss of property, or loss of life resulting from unsafe, unauthorized, or unlawful firearms use.
To the maximum extent permitted by North Carolina law:
- The Shop’s total liability arising from any work order is limited to the labor amount paid for the specific work that is the subject of the claim.
- The Shop is not liable for incidental, consequential, special, or punitive damages, including lost use, lost value, or lost profits.
- The Shop does not insure customer property against theft, fire, flood, or other casualty while in its possession.
- Requested alterations may void a manufacturer’s warranty.
17. Indemnification
You agree to indemnify and hold harmless Double H Gunsmithing, its owners, employees, and contractors from claims, losses, and expenses (including reasonable attorneys’ fees) arising from your requested work, your failure to disclose material facts, your use of handloaded or modified ammunition, use contrary to design, use of an item marked Unsafe to Fire or “use at your own risk,” or your violation of law.
18. Payment and release
Accepted methods are determined at payment. Firearms and parts remain in the Shop’s possession until the invoice is paid in full.
19. Hours
Current hours and appointment rules are published on the Contact page.
20. Governing law and severability
These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of North Carolina, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. Venue lies in the state courts of Caswell County, North Carolina, unless federal jurisdiction is required.
If any provision is held unenforceable, the remaining provisions continue in force.
21. Built-to-order parts and cancellations
Special-order and built-to-order items (including custom stocks, barrels, and similar made-to-pattern parts) cannot be cancelled without charge once the vendor has started production. Deposits on those items are applied to vendor cancellation fees, restocking, and shop time already spent.
22. Photographs of firearms and related work
By delivering a firearm or requesting service under these Terms, you authorize the Shop to photograph or otherwise record images of that firearm and related work for documentation and for demonstrating the Shop’s workmanship, including on the Shop’s websites, social media, and other marketing.
Before any public upload or publication, the Shop will obscure serial numbers and any personally identifiable information visible in the image, for example customer names on tags or paperwork in the frame.
This authorization is part of accepting service. It does not require a separate signature. You may decline publication of those images for marketing or for demonstration of the Shop’s workmanship by written request. The Shop will note that request on the work order.
23. Entire agreement
These Terms, together with the signed work order, claim check, invoice, and any written change acknowledgement, constitute the entire agreement for the services described. Operational details published on the Home, Visit, Ship, Contact, Transfers, and Shipping Services pages apply to the extent they do not conflict with a signed work order or invoice. If a signed work order or invoice conflicts with these Terms, the work order or invoice controls for that job.
The Shop may update these Terms. The version in effect when the work order is accepted governs that order. Oral statements do not modify these Terms.
