Glass Bedding

Double H Gunsmithing glass beds rifle stocks at our shop in Blanch, North Carolina. We bed the recoil lug and the action-screw contact points with Acraglas, free-float the barrel, and seal the barrel channel. Glass bedding starts at $120.

This can be a stand-alone job or part of a rifle build or other stock work. Back to all Services.

What we do

  • Bed the recoil lug and action-screw contact points with Acraglas
  • Free-float the barrel
  • Seal the barrel channel
  • Reassemble and test fire

A solid glass bed gives the action a consistent, stress-free seat in the stock, so the rifle repeats its zero and groups better.

When the stock and action do not mate evenly, tightening one action screw more than the other can bind or stress the action. Bedding the recoil lug and the action-screw contact points so the action sits true helps both screws take an even load and keeps the action from being twisted or pinched in the stock.

How we bed a stock

Barreled bolt action in a shop vise after it was taken out of the stock, trigger still attached
1. First we take the action out of the stock and set it up in the vise.
Barreled action masked with tape, including the recoil lug, before contact with Acraglas
2. Then the action gets masked and prepped for contact with the Acraglas.
Wood rifle stock with glass bedding compound applied in the recoil lug inlet and near an action screw
3. We generously apply glass bedding material into the stock at critical contact points near the recoil lug and action screws.
Masked receiver pressed into the stock while excess bedding compound is cleaned from the edges
4. The masked receiver gets firmly pushed down into the bedding material and any air pockets get squeezed out until the excess runs out the sides. We clean up the excess before it hardens and make the edges neat.
Cured glass bedding in the stock inlet after the action was removed, with the barrel channel opened for free-float
5. After the bedding cures for several hours, we pull the action back out and clean up any irregularities, and we open up the barrel channel so the barrel is free-floated.
Barrel channel sealed with finish after the stock was free-floated
6. Lastly, we seal the barrel channel with finish to protect it from the elements.

After that we put everything back together and test fire the gun.

That $120 figure is a starting point. The final is by estimate after we see the rifle. Prices assume payment by cash or check unless we note otherwise. Lead times follow our general repair windows on the home page lead times table unless we give a different estimate for your job.
