Sako Extractor Installation
Double H Gunsmithing installs Sako-style claw extractors on Remington Model 700 bolts at our shop in Blanch, North Carolina. The factory Remington clip extractor works for many rifles, but a machined Sako-style claw gives a stronger, more positive grip on the case rim. That upgrade is a common request on hunting and precision builds, and on 700s that have given trouble with extraction.
This page covers what the job involves, how we source kits, and what you can expect for pricing. Related work lives on our Rifle Builds, Rebarreling, and Triggers pages. Back to all Services.
What this upgrade does
On a Remington 700, the factory extractor is a thin spring clip that rides in a groove around the bolt face. A Sako-style install replaces that with a solid claw seated in a milled slot in the bolt head, retained by a spring and plunger. The claw engages more of the rim and is less prone to the slip and fatigue some shooters see with the stock clip, especially under hard extraction or dirty conditions.
We do this work primarily on Remington 700-pattern bolts. If you are bringing a donor or a full build, we can plan the extractor upgrade with the rest of the package.
How we do the work
We use the traditional silver-solder bushing method with a proper Sako extractor installation jig and blueprint dimensions for the extractor size you need. Marketing summary of the shop process:
- Bolt is disassembled (firing pin, factory extractor, and ejector as needed)
- Factory clip extractor groove is addressed and the bolt face is prepared
- Traditional silver-solder bushing method is used, with heat control to protect the hardened lugs
- Bolt face is finished to size
- Extractor slot is milled to the jig / blueprint for the chosen extractor size
- Retaining hole and spring/plunger hole are drilled and fitted
- Extractor, spring, and plunger are installed and function-checked, including an ejection check with your ammo when you bring it
We do not publish proprietary cut dimensions. The goal is a clean, durable install that extracts and ejects the way it should on your rifle.
Before and after
Parts and kits
We source kits from Pacific Tool and Gauge, and US Ballistics parts bought through MidwayUSA. Materials for a shop-supplied kit usually run around $60.
Bolt face size must match the extractor. Plungers and springs are universal across the common kits; the attention is on the extractor itself. Tell us the cartridge and bolt face (standard, magnum, and so on) when you book the job so we order or confirm the right claw.
Customer-supplied kits are welcome at drop-off. Bring the extractor, spring, and plunger that match your bolt face, and we will install them as part of the labor-only option below.
Pricing
- Complete Sako extractor installation with shop-supplied kit: starting at $240 (includes the extractor kit)
- Installation with a customer-supplied kit: shop labor starting at $180
Those are starting figures for what to expect on a typical Remington 700 bolt. Unusual bolt faces, additional repair, or related work on the same rifle are estimated separately. Prices assume payment by cash or check unless we note otherwise. Lead times follow our general repair windows on the home page lead times table unless we give a different estimate for your job.
What to bring
Always bring the complete rifle with your preferred scope mounted, fully unloaded. Also bring a few rounds of the ammo you plan to shoot so we can confirm the gun extracts and ejects properly after the install. If you are supplying the kit, bring the extractor that matches your bolt face, plus the spring and plunger. If we are supplying the kit, tell us the cartridge and bolt face when you call so we can have the right parts ready.
