Mauser Scope Installation
Double H Gunsmithing installs modern optics on Mauser and Mauser-pattern rifles at our shop in Blanch, North Carolina. Military Mausers were built for iron sights and a tall flag safety. Putting a low scope on one usually means more than rings and bases: the bolt handle has to clear the eyepiece, and the factory safety has to be replaced with a low-profile unit so the optic can sit where it belongs.
This page covers that package: low-profile safety installation, bolt-handle bending for clearance, and scope mounting with boresighting. If you only need a scope mounted and boresighted, and you already have the correct bases, rings, and scope, see Scope Mounting and Boresighting. Related work lives on our Rifle Builds page when the Mauser is part of a fuller build. Back to all Services.
Why military Mausers need this package
A surplus or military-style Mauser is a solid foundation for a hunting or range rifle, but the original layout fights a modern low optic. The factory flag safety stands tall behind the bolt shroud and will hit the scope tube or eyepiece if you try to mount the optic low. The straight bolt handle often will not clear a large eyepiece when you cycle the action. Bases and rings alone do not fix either problem.
We recommend treating the job as one package: install a low-profile safety so the scope can sit down on the receiver, bend the bolt handle so it clears the eyepiece, then mount and boresight the optic. That is how you get a usable cheek weld and reliable bolt travel with a modern scope on a classic Mauser action.
What the package includes
- Low-profile safety installation in place of the tall military flag safety
- Bolt-handle bending so the handle clears the scope eyepiece when the action is worked
- Scope mounting on suitable bases and rings, with boresighting
Scopes, rings, and bases may be customer-supplied or estimated separately. Part prices for optics and mount hardware vary by maker and change often, so we do not publish vendor sticker prices here. Tell us what optic and mount hardware you want when you call, or bring your preferred scope and mounts at drop-off.
Pricing
- Jobs of this type generally start around $380 for parts and labor (low-profile safety install, bolt-handle bend, and scope mounting with boresighting)
- Optional add-on: +$40 to take the rifle to the range and sight it in at 100 yards using your ammo
Those are rough starting estimates for a typical Mauser-pattern optics package. Unusual actions, additional repair, custom mount work, or related work on the same rifle are estimated separately. Scope, rings, and bases themselves are estimated separately or customer-supplied as noted above. Prices assume payment by cash or check unless we note otherwise. Lead times follow our general repair windows on the home page lead times table unless we give a different estimate for your job.
What to bring
Bring the complete rifle, fully unloaded. If you already have a preferred scope, bring it (and the rings and bases if you are supplying those). If you want the optional 100-yard sight-in, bring enough of the ammo you plan to shoot. Tell us the rifle model or pattern and what optic setup you want when you call so we can confirm parts and the starting figure.
Getting started
Call or text 336-694-5739, or email [email protected]. Tell us it is a Mauser scope installation package, what rifle you have, and whether you are bringing a scope and mounts or need an estimate on mounts and related parts. Talk through the rifle and optic setup, and we will confirm a rough starting estimate.
