Cerakote

Double H Gunsmithing applies Cerakote at our shop in Blanch, North Carolina. We coat metal components only, in solid colors, using H-series Cerakote exclusively.

We do not Cerakote polymer, wood, or other non-metal parts, and we do not offer patterned or multi-color camouflage layouts on this service.

Colors

We keep earth colors in stock: a selection of blacks, grays, greens, and tans.

Our most popular color is Midnight Blue, a bluing look-alike that is ideal for stainless and aluminum parts when you want them to match existing blue components or keep a traditional blue look without traditional hot blue on those metals. Cerakote has less luster than a polished blue finish, but the color is close.

This Ruger M77 was rebarreled with a stainless barrel. The customer asked for Midnight Blue so the new barrel would blend with the factory blued receiver. The photo shows the contrast of finishes: matte Cerakote on the barrel beside polished blue on the receiver.

On this job the customer wanted everything looking brand new with an identical finish, so we Cerakoted the new stainless barrel and the donor action together in Midnight Blue.

Graphite Black and the other earth tones stay on the shelf for everyday jobs. Other H-series solid colors can be ordered. There is a $45 fee to purchase a 4-ounce tester for a color we do not keep on the shelf. That tester fee is in addition to the coating labor estimate for your parts.

How we coat

We fully disassemble every firearm we coat, down to the small parts. Many shops spray while the gun is still assembled. That can let bead-blasting media into places it should not go, which leads to premature wear and malfunctions. We take the gun apart first so media and coating stay where they belong.

We are also careful with masking and overspray so tolerances on precision gun parts are not negatively affected.

Bolt body coated as far as practical; locking lugs left bare

That same attention shows up on the bolt. We coat the bolt body as far as we can go, but we leave the locking lugs uncoated. Coating the lugs would get crushed in use, pulverize the finish, and cause premature wear on the lugs.

What we do

  • H-series Cerakote in solid colors on metal only
  • Full disassembly before blast and coat (down to small parts)
  • Barrels, actions, barreled actions, muzzle devices, and other steel or aluminum parts
  • Prep, coat, and cure to Cerakote process standards for the H-series chemistry we use
  • Careful masking so overspray does not harm precision tolerances

Traditional blueing and related metal finishes remain on our Rebluing page. Laser marking over an existing Cerakote coat is covered under Laser Engraving.

Pricing

  • Barreled action and thread protector (in-stock earth color such as Midnight Blue or Graphite Black): approximately $200
  • Barrel and protector only: approximately $140
  • Other in-stock or special-order colors: add about $45 when a new 4-ounce tester must be purchased
  • Rifle-scale dark blue Cerakote as an alternative finish path: see also our Rebluing page (approximately $270 planning figure)

Those figures are estimates from similar past jobs and can vary with part count, prep, and color. Prices assume payment by cash or check unless we note otherwise. Lead times follow our general repair windows on the home page lead times table unless we give a different estimate for your job.

What to bring

Bring the metal parts fully unloaded if they are part of a firearm. Tell us which solid H-series color you want. If the color is not an earth tone we keep in stock, we will confirm the $45 tester order before we buy it.

Getting started

Call or text 336-694-5739, or email [email protected]. Tell us which parts need coating and which color you want. We will confirm H-series availability and give you a rough starting estimate.
