Custom Picatinny and Scout Rails

Double H Gunsmithing builds custom Picatinny and scout rails at our shop in Blanch, North Carolina. We machine a Picatinny blank to follow the contour of the receiver or barrel, then bed it with AccuGlas (accurate glass bedding compound) so the rail has even contact along its length.

About a $160 estimate when the existing screw holes can be used. If new holes must be drilled, that is $20 additional per hole, with a minimum of two holes. The final is by estimate after we see the rifle.

Mounting a scope you already have bases for is covered on Scope Mounting and Boresighting. A rail and optic you supply for a shotgun is covered on Shotgun Optic Installation. Back to all Services.

Example job

The photos below are a scout-rail install on a sporterized Krag-Jorgensen. The customer wanted a steampunk / Mad Max look. The rear sight was already off the barrel, and the old rear-sight screw holes were still sound, so we used those. We fit a Picatinny blank to the contour, bedded it with AccuGlas for even contact, and mounted it forward of the action as a scout rail.

What we do

  • Fit a Picatinny blank to the contour of the receiver or barrel
  • Bed the rail with AccuGlas so contact is even along the rail
  • Use existing screw holes when they line up and are in good shape
  • Drill and tap new holes when the rifle does not already have usable ones

Every rifle sits a little different. We look at the contour, the holes that are already there, and where you want the optic before we cut metal. A forward scout rail and a rail on the receiver are both in this work. Tell us which you have in mind when you call.

Pricing

  • About $160 estimate when existing screw holes can be used
  • New holes: $20 additional per hole, minimum of two holes
  • Final price is by estimate after we see the rifle

That $160 figure is an estimate for a rail we can attach with screw holes the gun already has. If the holes are missing, stripped, or in the wrong place, drilling is $20 per hole, and we count a minimum of two holes. A long rail, an odd contour, or other machine work is estimated separately after we look at the rifle. Prices assume payment by cash or check unless we note otherwise. Lead times follow our general repair windows on the home page lead times table unless we give a different estimate for your job.

What to bring

Bring the rifle fully unloaded. Tell us whether you want a receiver rail or a forward scout rail, and whether the gun already has screw holes we might use. Rear-sight holes are a common case, as on the Krag above. If you have a scope, red dot, or mount in mind, bring it or tell us the model so we can plan rail length and where it sits.

Getting started

Call or text 336-694-5739, or email [email protected]. Tell us the rifle and what you want the rail to do. We will look at the gun and confirm an estimate before we start.
